Uber-Geek
Geeknitude:
potential or natural talent and / or
ability for developing profiency in being and becoming a geek.
I have already listed several definitions of what a geek
is.
But how does a person become more then a simple geek? How does one truly
become an Uber-geek and what does that mean? Defining who or what an Uber-geek
is, is not that simple, as an Uber-geek rises from various ways.
Related Geek terms: geekdom, geekling, geekly, geekness,
geekliness, geeking
The Simple Way
Although titled 'simple' that in no way implies that
this is
an 'easy' way to achieve Uber-geekness. The simplest how and why of an Uber-
geek is a person who has so mastered his or her chosen area of geekliness that
other master in that area seek them out for enlightenment. This is normally
typified in the ultra-intelligent yet lacking social skills
geek.
Varied Geek
One can attain Uber-geekness via another route, a way
that
can prove hard but enjoyable. By delving into many areas of geekdom one
becomes a Geek-of-many-yet-master-of-none. The thing with this route is that a
geek actually does manage to master several different areas then can move up to
Uber-geek status. The key here is mastering different areas and will normally
involve some combination of intellectual and physical geek
activities.
Fate Smiles
Another way a person gains Uber-geek hood is one that
is
not so much of a choice as a combination of fate and life choices. Fate smiles
on this geekling when born and grants several gifts (if you will). In addition
to the usual amount of intelligence and imagination that is granted to normal
geeks, this child is granted addition physical and social attributes that are
usually lacking in most geeks; attractiveness, athletic, charisma, and
dexterity. This alone does not qualify the person for Uber-geekness. Nor does
it mean that it will be easy. With these additional attributes it is easy for
life to move the fledgling geek away from geekly pursuits. Peer pressure in
their formative years can cause the geekling to be part of the 'cool' crowd and
turn their back on their geekness. Some of these additional attributes don't
become apparent until later in life, for instance, the ugly-duckling who
finally makes it through puberty and blossoms into an attractive young man or
woman. But, for the geekling who takes advantage of what has been offered and
embraces their geekness and uses the addition attributes to their advantage
they can attain Uber-geek status.

something to offend someone somewhere on the list, if not now then eventually.

Geek Stuff
Below you will find
brief blurbs and links to some areas of geekdom that have made me the geek that
I am today. Proceeding past this point can cause you to experience geek-like
behavior.
In no particular order.
- Society For
Creative Anachronism
- For those of you who love medieval history, those who
have ever dreamt of courtly feasts, valiant knights and lovely damsels; then
this is the place for you. The SCA is a world-wide organization that allows
you to immerse yourself in your fantasies with weekend to week long events
where everyone is a participant. Dress in period costumes, attend feast, watch
or participate in period fighting, be entertained or entertain at a bardic
circle, learn medieval dance steps, attend a class on all things medieval. And
let's not forget the best part of all - PARTIES! Truly one of the best ways
for a group of like minded friends to get together for a
weekend.
-
Robotech
- What can I say about one of the first and greatest
anime I ever watched? From the first time I saw it I was hooked. I was
fascinated by the huge battle mechs that could convert into a cool ass jet
fighter. Back then it was all about the cool battle scenes, aliens and robots.
It inspired a life long passion, which nowadays manifest it self in
MECHWARRIORS!!! and my interest in Anime. Working in the desert has given me
plenty of time to go watch more anime so I recently bought the boxed set for
Robotech. I can honestly say that it is still good today, albeit in a
different way.
- MechWarrior: Dark Age
- Ok, I have already admitted to being a geek. Now I
admit to being a big kid. Mechwarriors R0xx0rz! How cool can you get?
Battlemechs + super cool clickable base + table top warfare + collectable = an
addiction for me. Luckily I wasn't alone in this and I have several friends
who helped... helped me by being just as addicted as I am. One of my best
friends and I came across the Wiz Kids booth at DragonCon 2002 and we were
hooked. I am such a freekin geek (and my friend too) that we had mechs shipped
to us while in Baghdad.
- Dungeons & Dragons
- Created by Gary Gygax, the father (hmmm grandfather by
now) of Role-playing as we now know it. From my earliest memories I have been
fascinated by fantasy, myths, and legends. So it was only natural as a 12-13
yr old I would fall in with the wrong kind of people and they would lead me
down the dark road to the occult all in the guise of a game! (queue ominous
music) {Sidetrack - Many years ago 'The Dead Alewives' did one of the single
funniest parodies ever on the occult hype surrounding DnD. If I can find a good
link I'll add it but in the mean time google 'dead alewives' and you'll find it
eventually. Several years ago the makers of Summoner used the skit as a
basis for a short video clip which makes the skit even funnier.} Once I was
introduced to DnD I was hooked on RPG's for life. I had the great pleasure of
playtesting a new game by Gary Gygax called 'Dangerous Journey' while a student
in college, truly a dream of any avid roleplayer. In addition, I received a
Christmas card from him saying thanks! And, I got to meet him when we premiered
the game at Dragon Con. Unfortunately I have played a good game in forever -
well at least a year or so. I still have all my original books and even some of
the newer ones to come out. Unfortunately with the enormous number of 'rule'
books that have come out I feel it has lost some of its flavor. Yes I know ...
geek.

- Dragon Con
- I realized that my last 2 entries mentioned Dragon
Con, so I guess I should link it too. Dragon is the ultimate weekend geek-fest
where one can partake of every geek-vice known. It also happens to be one of
the largest cons in the states. Be sure to bring your
camera.
Online Comics
Online comics take up way too much of my time lately. I can
spend several hours at work reading through them. I normally find one that
looks interesting and then go to the beginning and start reading. I'll then
spend the next few days or week reading until I am caught up. All most all of
the ones that I am reading have been online for several years. Online artists
are hard working and dedicated individual doing for the love of their art.
They do not get paid to do the strips and most get very little recognition
until devoting several years to their 'hobby'. Kudos to all of them. Although
as a comic gathers a following and fan base, the artist will hopefully get to
print. In addition for die hard fans the more popular ones have merchandise
available for geeks to show their support and show off their
geekness.
- Megatokyo
- My first online comic. This also happens to be one of the best out there.
Megatokyo is very well written and drawn. When I first came across it several
months ago, I read it from start to finish in a week. Then I ordered the
graphic novels and promptly ordered me a Megatokyo cap. A good friend of mine
(who I turned on to it and has become addicted to it as well) bought me the
cool Ninj4 t-shirt that I am wearing at this very moment! Yeah, if you haven't
figured it out by now I am a geek. Do a google search for 'manga' and the 4th
hit is for Megatokyo.
- AlienDice
- What can I say about Aliendice? Aliendice is a interesting story with a
very new
and interesting plot setting. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this one and
check it everyday to see what is going to happen. It has everything a good
story needs: aliens, cute adorable animals, an underdog hero, a courageous
young woman, action, adventure and intrigue.
- Sluggy Freelance
- A
classic. Another long running comic that started out good and has remained
interesting, fun and funny. Very funny. A varied cast of characters: a
freelance web design, an alien, a psychopathic bunny, an ADD ferret, a witch, a
college student, a inventor?, a studly vampire, oh and don't forget the hosts
of demons or incarnations of holidays and ... oh hell just go read it ... its
been ongoing for like 8 years or something crazy.
- The Wandering Ones by
Day
- An awesome work of art! The artwork and story is superb. The
characters and plot development is excellent. The detail in every panel is
simply amazing. In an age and time when comic artists skimp on the drawings
with minimal scenery and detail, 'The Wandering Ones' stands out as a true work
of art. Did I mention the story ... heh ok I wont beat a dead horse... go read
it.
